Douglas Smith League Cup Final 18/19

Author: Robert Porter, 10/02/19

Ginnock North - Douglas Smith League Cup 18/19 winners

East Kilbride YM 0 Giffnock North 2

On a wet and windy evening which proved troublesome for both teams, Giffnock lifted the Douglas Smith League Cup following two first half goals.

An vicious early corner signalled Giffnocks intent, with East Kilbride keeper Fraser Campbell handling well under pressure.

East Kilbride responded, and saw a Jordan Fletcher shot parried by Giffnock keeper Craig Marshall.

Giffnock’s Ross MacDonald spurned a glorious opportunity after 15 minutes.  Having been sent clear of the East Kilbride defence the forward had time to pick his spot, but Campbell did well to steer the ball wide with a strong right hand.

East Kilbride then created a similar opportunity.  This time Marshall did well blocking with his feet to save from Mikey Carroll to save Steven Greers blushes following a miscontrol by the defender.

A piece of good football and good fortune saw Giffnock takes the lead on 25 minutes.  A good interchange saw the ball arrive at Jason Cassidy - whose shot towards goal took a big deflection and looped over everyone and into the East Kilbride net.

Giffnock then took a firm grip on the game by scoring a second.  Scott Burns took a quick corner and passed to Kieran Downs. Downs crossed quickly and Jason Rae steered the ball home from 6 yards.

An East Kilbride corner hit the top of the Giffnock bar as they sought to find a route back into the game.

Half time 0:2

East Kilbride pressed forward - with Ryan Kelly shooting over from distance.

Giffnocks Kieran Downs and Scott Burns then saw shots from distance go unrewarded.

East Kilbride substitute Connor McCann saw a 30 yard free kick strike the Giffnock bar with Marshall beaten.  The ball bounced to safety.

Giffnock’s Nicholas Kane then hit the East Kilbride bar as the game swayed from each goalmouth.

As the match progressed, Giffnock were limiting East Kilbride to long range efforts, with defensive pairing Mark Shanta and Steven Greer organising their team-mates around them well.

Given the conditions, both teams did well to entertain an appreciative watching crowd.
